  Course Overview:

The purpose of the FAQ Level 3 Award for First Responders on Scene: Ambulance Service Co-Responder is to provide Learners with the skills, knowledge and understanding to provide the appropriate care prior to the arrival of an ambulance.

It covers the principles of ambulance service first responder care, the knowledge and skills relating to scene safety and patient assessment, life-threatening emergencies, illnesses, medical conditions and injuries and major trauma and physical extrication.

The qualification is aimed at individuals who intend to work as ambulance co-responders or first responders with responsibility for providing immediate emergency care.

This qualification forms part of the FutureQuals first responder on scene (FROS®) qualification suite and is Category D on the FPHC PHEM Skills Framework.


  Course Will Enable Learners To:

The course is taught over five days.

Component 1: Principles of Ambulance Service First Responder Care

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of an ambulance service first responder / first person on scene.
  • Understand the requirements for information governance, confidentiality and the principles of infection prevention and control.
Component 2:  Scene Safety and Patient Assessment
  • Scene Safety and Patient Assessment including the Mechanism of injury concept.
  • Be able to use personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Be able to conduct a primary survey – Patient assessment and management.
  • Measuring and reporting physiological measurements – Managing deviations from expected patient physiology
  • Be able to conduct a secondary survey – Gathering patient history information.
  • Secondary surveys – Pre-alerts – Clinical handover to medical professionals
  • Understand the principles of medication administration – Administration of medications guidelines.
Component 3: Responding to Life-Threatening Emergencies
  • Be able to provide treatment to an unresponsive patient following the chain of survival – Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Safe use of the Automated external defibrillators (AED)
  • Advanced airway management in an infant, child and adult.
  • Seizures – Recognition of life extinct
  • Be able to manage an airway obstructed by a foreign body in an infant, child, adult.
  • Controlling and providing treatment to a patient experiencing catastrophic haemorrhage
  • Recognise, manage and  treat a patient who is experiencing shock – Types of shock
  • Be able to provide treatment to a patient experiencing anaphylaxis and demonstrate safe use of the auto-injector.
Component 4: Responding to Illnesses and Medical Conditions
  • Recognise and provide treatment to a patient with a suspected respiratory condition.
  • Recognise and provide treatment to a patient with a suspected cardiovascular condition.
  • Recognise and provide treatment to a patient with a suspected neurological condition.
  • Recognise and manage a patient experiencing a diabetic emergency.
  • Know the routes poisons can enter the body and provide treatment to a patient affected by sudden poisoning.
  • Be able to administer oxygen therapy with the appropriate oxygen masks and flow rates.
Component 5: Responding to Injuries
  • Be able to provide treatment to a patient with minor injuries including different types of wounds.
  • Recognise and be able to provide treatment to a patient experiencing external bleeding, internal bleeding and estimating blood loss.
  • Recognise the severity and provide treatment for various types of burns and scalds.
  • Recognise and be able to treat a patient with suspected fractures and dislocations.
  • Recognise and be able to treat sprains and strains to muscle, tendons and ligaments.
  • Recognise and treat head injuries and spinal injuries including immobilisation.
  • Recognise and treat a patient with suspected chest injuries which will include flail chest and penetrating chest injury
  • Recognising and treat abdominal injuries and their potential complications.
  • Understand when clinical intervention is needed for the management of injuries.
Component 6: Responding to Major Trauma and Patient Extrication
  • Be able to manage a trauma scene.
  • Be able to assess and manage trauma patients.
  • Know the factors that influence the extrication of trauma patients including environmental factors that could impact the extrication of a trauma patient and time factors that need to be considered.
  • Be able to extricate a trauma patient using supporting equipment.
  • Know the circumstances when a helmet should be removed and the potential risks during helmet removal.


  Assessment:

Method of Assessment: The qualification consists of six Components and includes both knowledge-based and competence-based assessment criteria. Two multiple-choice question assessments cover the knowledge-based assessment criteria. Both of these assessments are externally set, marked and quality assured by FutureQuals and are undertaken on-screen.

The first assessment will present the learner with 20 questions in a multiple-choice format, which are mapped to the learning outcomes of Component 1 of the qualification. The second assessment will present the learner with 40 questions in a multiple-choice format, which are mapped to the learning outcomes of Components 2-5 of the qualification.

An Evidence Log assessment tool consisting of practical observations covers all of the competence-based learning outcomes. The Evidence Log also covers the remaining knowledge-based assessment criteria of Component 6 through oral questioning. These assessments are externally set, internally marked and externally quality assured and moderated by FutureQuals. Simulation is permitted.

The overall qualification is graded as pass or fail.

Qualification:
On successful completion of this course delegates will receive a FutureQuals approved FROS certificate, valid for three years.

Re-Qualification:
Once awarded, the qualification certificate is valid for a period of 3 years. The Learner will need to retake the full qualification again before the certificate expiry date in order to remain qualified.


  Daily Programme:

The course takes 5 Days to complete and runs bewteen 09:00 – 17:00 each day.
